a few crucial considerations determined the options chosen in this project, which is truly immersed in the landscape: an area under a nature conservation order plus an extensive garden, surrounded by luxuriant, lush countryside. a handful of key elements struck the right note for a dialogue between the existing features of the site, a new building and the lakeside setting. these constraints defined the project designed for a holiday home in toscolano maderno on lake garda. selected in a restricted private competition, the project required approval from the planning authorities, which slowed implementation somewhat but allowed the project scope to develop to fruition and meld perfectly with the setting. the new extension, added to the older house that opens onto a garden with hundred-year-old palm trees and a grove of lemon trees, enters into a contrast-driven dialogue with this existing building. constructed from cement with black pigment and floor-to-ceiling glazing, and incorporating a roof that also serves as a terrace for the adjacent house, the new-build extension almost seems to disappear into the garden, becoming an integral part of it. the interiors open onto the garden via the large windows, custom-made by south tyrolean artisans and designed to sink into the ground, turning the roughly textured stone floor into a natural extension of the lawn. part of the external façade of the existing house serves as an internal wall in the living room. a swimming pool in the garden adds the finishing touch to the project.
